-Child in the box
This child is a tennis champion. That child has joined a criminal gang. This child is a soloist in a choir. That child is silent and uncommunicative. This child cuts her arms to feel something. That child is the leader of the chess club. This child is having a party. That child is not invited. How did these children get this way? In all probability, it was an accident of birth. Children are born into an intergenerational box of accumulated domestic and socio-economic values. The definition of the box can generally be described as a “feel for normalcy.” The feel for normalcy begins in a child’s infancy, when his parents consciously, or unconsciously, pass on the specifics of their particular belief systems and cultural norms........more The following is Statistics Canada's articles describing relevant parenting information in scientific terms. I consider this important because it separates family mythology's from objective facts. Anything in italics is a comment from me extracting, an idea I consider important for consideration of fathers. -Bob Turner Converging gender roles Katherine Marshall While women's entry into the job market has been dramatic, men's entry into housework has been gradual, prompting some to call the latter a 'stalled revolution' (Cooke 2004). However, this study shows that, although gender differences persist in the division of labour, they are steadily diminishing. Since 1986, of the total time spent on paid and unpaid work, women aged 25 to 54 have proportionally increased their average daily time at a job (4.4 hours of 8.8 in 2005), while men have increased their time on housework (1.4 of 8.8 hours in 2005). As women's job attachment has increased, so too has men's involvement in housework and child care. Women's increasing hours in paid labour (and thus income), combined with "normative changes in the direction of equality and sharing" (Beaujot 2006, p. 24) is likely to further reduce gender differences in the division of labour in the future....more Not surprisingly the idea of "the little woman" at home looking after the kids is unlikely to happen ....bt Parental Work, Child-care Use and Young Children's Cognitive Outcomes: Product main page The study indicates that parental participation in the labour market has little effect on the school readiness scores of most pre-school-aged children. However, children's school readiness does appear to be influenced by parental labour market participation if the parents exhibit above-average parenting skills and levels of parental education. Children of mothers who display above-average parenting skills and higher levels of education tend to benefit slightly when their mothers do not work outside the home. Likewise, children of fathers with above-average education exhibit slightly higher cognitive outcomes if their fathers work part time. ...it all boils down to above average parenting skills...
