Vancouver born musician and composer Bob Turner has a life -long interest in communication and the arts. His extensive personal arts history spans somefourty years, and ranges from promoting and performing in local arts events to performing with noted Jazz groups (extended stints with Bob Murphy, Ron Johnson, Henry Young and Almeta Speaks) as a bass violin player as well as electric bass in Rock bands including the legendary” Blacksnake”. His electronic music represented Canada at Expo 86 and at Expo 88 in Australia. Bob Turner has composed music for Dance and Theater ( Paula Ross, Linda Rubin) companies and for performance art -projects; he founded and directed a Theatre -Performance Gallery in Vancouver (Todays Theatre Gallery); and has independently produced original compositions reaulting in many casettes and CD's which he performs on midi-keyboards, flute and bass violin.
Bob Turners work took a “formal” humanistic turn when he became involved with child care at UBC from 1977 to 1983. This care giving component coupled with his passion for electronic music lead him in a new direction. - featuring the integration of science, art and humanistic care.
Bob Turner was Artist in Residence at Simon Fraser University School of Engineering Science during 1989-1991 there he realized his ideas to empower disabled musicians by directing the designing and development of digital electronic components which gave the disabledmusician the possibility of an actual reconnection with making music.
Subsequently, working with the Vancouver Adaptive Music Society (VAMS) the midi-modem-midi device was perfected so that musicians who are immobile can now musically communicate with other musicians in real time from city to city over a telephone link to the digital technology. He was also instrumental in assembling several performance groups of disabled musicians and recorded and videod their work. Notable full length productions were “Spinal Chord” (Dave Symington and Sam Sullivan - VAMS ) funded by the Vancouver Adapted Music Society and “Frank Popow” funded by Access Arts Canada.
Bob Turner turned his efforts towards working with mentally disabled artists by producing full length music cassettes of original work, and by establishing a coffee house venue to encourage live performance for people diagnosed as mentally disabled. This activity was funded by Primal Mental Health Production Association.
Recent video productions have included 2 videos collaborating with Vancouver painter Richard Tetrault and the Sound track for "Four Installations" in collaboration with Cuban installation artist Tonel.
Bob Turner’s interest in electronic composition has taken him from the point of assembling a music production and video studio on into the field of multi-media computer technology and web site development. In 1995 he and his computer -programmer- partner, Jeff Koftinoff , launched their Internet Filter software to address concerns over issues of censorship and freedom of expression in a world where vigilance is mandatory for those who value an unfettered liberal approach to personal statement and creativity. This software and the problems it addresses are both still alive today. Bob Turner continues to move in an unlimited realm of ideas in his search to contribute to the community as an artist, and as a facilitator linking the arts with science, technology and humanity
As an elder in the community Bob Turner is delighted hi next humanistic move is to bring his communication/facilitator talents to the fathering project. . To hear music, see videos, read articles, and event updates produced by Bob Turner please visit his web site at: http://www.turnercom.com
